Cork man releases book detailing his struggles with gambling and alcohol addictions

A Cork man has bravely shared his story of how he overcame gambling and alcohol addictions and now helps others who are struggling with the same issues.

Con Hurley, originally from Farranree, has written a book about his addictions and how they completely gripped his life, tearing apart his relationships.

The 59 year old had a tough upbringing and was one of 21 children in his family, with his father being away with the army and his mother having her own difficulties with addiction.

Con's addiction started when he joined the army at the age of 17, as drink was so cheap he would be out all the time and his regular drinking soon became a habit.

He told the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's Red FM how his issues tore apart his family and led to his close relationships breaking down.

"I had two girls with my wife Irene but we split up and she went to Liverpool with them. I then moved to Dublin where I met my wife Trish who I am still with today.

"We moved back to Cork and bought a family home and at that point my life just revolved around drinking and gambling. I was getting deeper and deeper in debt.
